    Branscan 2000 Laboratory instrument
  • The instrument comprises a measuring station and a control station. The control station is a modified PC. A sample of 150g of semolina is placed on the window at the top of the measuring station. The lid is closed and counting is started. As each image is counted it can be displayed on the screen. It takes 2 min to assess 22 images. Results, including standard error of the mean can be exported in a standard format or saved to file on the control station. The sample is brushed off into a collecting bin within the measuring station
  • Branscan 4000 on-line system
  • The sampling unit of this on-line instrument is located within the mill's pneumatic spouting system or in a gravity spout. Samples are automatically taken from the flow every 20 seconds. Images are displayed and specks are counted on the control station located in the mill's control room. Speck counts are plotted as a moving average on a vertical axis. The horizontal time axis can be flexibly displayed to show performance over periods from 1 hour to 24 h. Up to 4 measuring stations can be used with a single control station, which can be used to adjust milling variables to optimise speck control in the semolina.
  • Durum semolina
  • Semolina milled from Triticum durum is used mainly for production of pasta. A high degree of refinement is desirable because fragments of seed coat and fruit coat, known as bran specks, are visually unattractive in pasta products. Furthermore when exposed to polyphenol oxidase in moist conditions, bran specks become darker, thus exaggerating their unattractive appearance. Polyphenol oxidase is an enzyme present in whole wheat but it does not contact the outer layers of the grain until cells in the grain are ruptured during milling.
  • Keeping bran specks out of the product
  • As a quality control measure, samples of semolina are traditionally subjected to a 'speck count', whereby they are visually examined in special counting chambers by trained and experienced technicians, who record the number of specks per unit area exposed at the face of the chamber. The number of specks that is acceptable is a matter of contract between supplier and customer.
  • Until recently there was little alternative to visual counting but, with the advent of digital image analysis, automated counting became a reality. Automated counting, using the right equipment is: · much more rapid than manual counting · much more consistent than manual counting · much more reproducible than manual counting · much less expensive than manual counting In addition, automated counting, using the right equipment offers the possibility for on-line monitoring as the basis for process control. The right equipment A pioneering user of image analysis tested his system by making a series of blends in which branny particles of semolina were added in known proportions to semolina from which branny particles had been removed. The image analysis system produced the following relationship between speck count and branny particles present
  • Branscan Ltd offers a range of instruments for automated, non-destructive counting of specks in durum semolina. Laboratory and on-line process control instruments employ the same imaging and image processing technologies. Consequently both types of system give the same results. At the heart of the systems is an intelligent measuring algorithm, which takes account of the unavoidable fluctuations in light intensity that affect assessment by other instruments. The intelligent algorithm enables a calibration installed by manufacturer or user to be maintained indefinitely. Branscan instruments can also count black particles separately from bran particles.

Powderscan is aimed at all manufacturers of powder based products who need a reliable in-line (process) or laboratory system to measure the quality of the products. Along with the ability to measure the number of specks in powder the instruments also have the ability to measure : Number of Brown Specks Number of Black Specks (as a separate measurement) Percentage of Black Specks Percentage of Brown Specks Average Speck Size and by using all or even just a few of the above results the system can also give you a meaningful quality measurement, whether it needs to be mesh scale or just a simple grading method the instruments can be configured to give you the measurements that you and your customers recognise and understand. Both the in-line (Process) known as the P4000, and laboratory known as the P2000 instruments are based on the well established Branscan instruments which have been used in large and small flour mills throughout the world for over eight years. Like our other in-line products the Powderscan P4000 can have up to four measuring stations connected to one control station, allowing fast and accurate monitoring in multiple powder lines. By using the built in alarms in the software, and by using digital relays the system can be connected to your factories PLC allowing quick responses when quality issues are found. The In-line measuring heads are made of high grade stainless steel and are therefore able to be fitted to your existing pipes without any modifications. From milk powders to UPVC plastics, the Powderscan instruments can be tailored to meet your quality needs. .
